Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. Industrial electric drive technologies include three-phase induction motors, synchronous motors, DC motors and various types of servo and linear motors. Depending on the application, they differ in design, power range, speed characteristics and control requirements.
When recruiting electric motor specialists, we therefore establish whether experience in electromagnetic design, mechanical design, thermal analysis, testing or industrial motor applications is required. A development role for a new motor series calls for a different skill set than a sales-oriented position focused on standard industrial drives.
Variable frequency drives (VFDs) adapt a motor's electrical supply to different operating requirements. By adjusting frequency and voltage, they enable variable-speed operation of electric drives. Depending on the application, this may involve V/f control, vector control or servo control.

For these roles, we look for experience in speed, torque and position control as well as integrating electric drives into machine designs. We distinguish between drive system development, application engineering and integration into existing automation environments when defining the candidate profile.
Electrical drive technology also includes power electronics and the interaction between motors, control algorithms and control systems. In decentralised servo drive systems, for example, power electronics may be integrated directly into the motor rather than housed entirely in a control cabinet.
When recruiting, we establish whether the main focus is hardware development, embedded software, drive control or system integration. Expertise in individual components must be assessed differently from responsibility for a complete electrical drive solution.
For energy-efficient drive solutions, the electric motor, variable frequency drive and application must be properly matched. One example is a drive package combining a synchronous reluctance motor with a compatible converter. The potential energy savings depend on the specific system and its operating conditions.
